Happy Birthday, Agatha Christie!
Today would have been the birthday of one of the best-selling novelists of all time, Dame Agatha Christie. Ms. Christie was born on September 15, 1890, in Torquay, Devon, England. She was an avid reader from a young age, devouring Sherlock Holmes mysteries as a girl. In her illustrious career, she published 66 detective novels, as well as 14 short story collections. She was also the writer of the long-running play, The Mousetrap. The murder mystery set a record for the longest-running play in history, with 25,000 performances. Her books have sold an astonishing 2 billion copies, and have been translated into 103 different languages. Agatha’s best-selling novel is the 1939 classic, And Then There Were None, with 100 million copies sold to date. She was the creator of memorable recurring characters such as Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Agatha Christie passed away on January 12, 1976, leaving behind a lasting literary legacy.
